Iris just got better. This might just be the most underrated fragrance house in the United States. This is one of the best iris scents on this planet. There is a 35 percent concentration. Would you believe it if I told you this is all natural? And just when I thought I had my favorite chypres down, BOOM, this enters the fold.

The perfumer stated he wanted to produce an iris-heavy French-style chypre attar. Irones typically are maxed out at 15 to 25 percent in a fragrance, but this has 35 percent irones.

Orris has many facets, floral and woody, earthy and fresh, sweet and bitter, wimpy and strong (hang with me, here, I will explain this). To make things even more confusing, iris is a perfume “note,” which means it gets interpreted. A perfumer can develop an accord that highlights any of its facets. So when someone says they love a specific iris perfume, what they are really saying is that they love the way iris has been interpreted.

This is the most seductive chypre opening I have come across. The bergamot is laced with the spices and is mixed rather than forming its own note creating a spicy citrus fresh opening. This is one of the reasons I can’t stand synthetic cinnamon or what I call urinal-cake flavoring. This cinnamon is a fragrant aromatic and not your mama’s potpourri. It’s stunning and adds a perfect elixir, if you will, to the bergamot. The heart of this fragrance is truly a heart. This thing is beating with the life of the orris. Huge amounts of powder dust the oakmoss. This is different than the typical powder you’re thinking of; this is thick, fresh vintage olfaction that takes time to understand. Those two ingredients and others (specifically, the Chinese incense) form a dynamic fume. This is new for me, but according to the perfumer, it takes after Roja’s Haute Luxe but with all naturals. The incense comes forth, which is covered in powder that infuses the incense. This wears exactly like a chypre would, meaning there are citrus to floral to oakmoss transitions. And then every rule is broken. Iris is in the name, and the note is sung better than anything else. This is at Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” level; the iris ebbs and flows through this chypre like nothing I have seen before. This is worth the cost of the ticket for getting your nose on this quality of orris. It is so deep and poignant. The final drydown turns into the most fresh baby powder you could ever smell.

Overall, this hits on the famous chypre notes, but is an interpretation you need to smell if you like chypres and iris. Elixir Attars has put its unique stamp on this composition that shines in this crowded category. If you were putting on twenty different chypres and choosing something, this would stand out as a top three for its clear beauty in composition, top-shelf rare raw ingredients, and its back-and-forth play with the orris note alone.
