There it is one of my first introductions to Guerlain. The say it’s oud, but it don’t smell like oud. But it is a great heavy duty perfume that offers great projection and sillage. Cedar, agarwood, leather are the primary sniff off the cuff. Saffron is a nice top. That is really what I pull through the whole sniff. Anth the signature guerlain scent is very strong in this one almost like an extrait. Fragrance in my opinion compared to Perfumes Notes Here we have a take on an all to common combo from the east that Guerlain is taking on. Rose, Oud, Leather. I don’t smell an ounce of real naturals in this compared to the many others I own and have tried with the 1,2,3 combo that is a standard for eastern perfumery. They are trying to take what is so dynamic and do it synthetically. There are a couple ways to handle this review let’s go to composition. Let’s be honest if you are even looking at this fragrance most likely you know guerlain and want there take on oud. There DNA house accord I with way to many others adore. I am a fan of Vintage and modern accord. So you spray this on and it is more sillage and projection that I am used too with Guerlain. The oud comes out right away. My nose will not let me believe there is any actual real oud in this, but there charging so much there has to be. I have to say no. It’s a pleasing accord with no mental depth or medicinal benefits through the whiff. The rose is a very familiar red that I have smelt to many times. No real wood of depth came through just that guaiac one note off. All notes hit and are not really attempted at being to well blended in my opinion. Okay this is Guerlain it is a pleasing accord with aforementioned notes. I like it, I don’t like price I am going for real ingredients all day long. If this were like Mugler at the less than a $1 an ML I think I would be more excited as this is where this deserves, quit pricing luxury if you are not providing luxury. Not going to pay triple for synthetic because your name is Guerlain OKAY Rant over.

After playing around with some of my aroma chemicals I found that "Pretty Oud" by Firmenich was very close to the opening of the Guerlain Oud Essential. Thanks for the rundown on this fragrance. Have you come across any synthetic compositions that pull off an approximation of genuine ouds?
There is nothing that comes close to pulling off real oud. As far as oud accords that are used wisely in perfume Oud Rain by Reiner Perfume and Royal Oud from Creed are done very well, but oud should not be in their names, just their note list. My opinion.
I've been looking to find a great "real" Oud Dominant Fragrance for sooo long that's not going to bankrupt me, I've only found one, which is Oud Shamash by The Different Company, but still looking for a more dominant oud frag. Any suggestions?
As far as an affordable one that has the same kind of oud accord in it as this and lot's of others. Reiner perfume oud rain is a must try at it's price.
@Therapeutic Fragrance thank you! I'm going to look at that one tonight. 🙂
Btw, thank you for your honesty.
I agree that this is nearly 100% synthetic and contains hardly any Guerlinade. Guerlain like MANY other companies uses varying amounts of synthetics vs naturals. I know you're new to Guerlain but man… 99.9% of the oud’s you think are real oud’s aren't real. Even the attar’s from the middle east. These are Guerlain’s worst by the way. So, you started with the worst and can only go up from here with the brand.
LOL on Guerlains worst. BTW I really enjoy all your input it was fun to wake up to. I have yet to find an attar with synthetic oud. I have amouage's but haven't applied yet. I am fairly novice on Guerlain, but if I have a nose for anything it is authentic oud. It is my favorite note I have put most of my energy in learning the note. Yes I would say there is no oud in this fragrance or almost any other sold in fancy boutiques. I have ran across a couple of exceptions Roja's Amber Aoud I would vouch for real oud in that. But on Instagram and here this is my biggest blasting of companies if you put oud on the bottle it better contain the real thing or rename it. Big reason I have a scoring system is this to be able to dock like crazy for these reasons. Thanks for the lively feedback.
I have been thinking of purchasing this perfume and santal royal. I just wanted to you know from you if you recommend this one. Which one from Les absolu D'orient line do you recommend.
As I have tons of stuff with Oud I went with Santal Royal in my collection. I love both this is one of the synthetic ouds I really like.
